£10,500
A locomotive bunker number plate, SOUTHERN RAILWAY W11, from a LB&SCR A1 class €˜Terrier' 0-6-0T built at Brighton Works in 1878 as No 40 and named BRIGHTON. Sold in November 1901to the Isle of Wight Central Railway, where it was numbered 11. Passed to the Southern Railway in 1923 and renumbered W11 when this plate was fitted. Named NEWPORT in 1930. Returned to the mainland in February 1947, renumbered 2640 and finally BR 32640 in March 1951. Withdrawn during September 1963 and sold to Sir Billy Butlin for display at his Pwllheli holiday camp. Later saved for preservation and returned to the Isle of Wight in January 1973. The bunker plates on the later 02 0-4-4T locomotives invariably had the SOUTHERN RAILWAY lettering ground off in BR days, so this is a rare survivor. Cast brass, 13¾"x7½", the front repainted. A rare opportunity to acquire a bunker plate with the Southern Railway wording intact. (Dispatch by P&P Agent/Collect from Banbury Depot)
