Northern & Eastern Rly, Paper Northern & Eastern Railway. A second class paper ticket from Harlow to Ware printed in red ink on yellow paper. As from 1 January 1844 the N&ER was leased to the Eastern Counties Railway and operated as part of its own system. The lease passed to the GER when this absorbed the ECR on 7 August 1862, but the company retained its nominal independence until it was absorbed into the L&NER at the grouping on 1 January 1923.
