A nameplate BENJAMIN DISRAELI from Metropolitan Railway electric locomotive number 14. Built in 1923 by Metropolitan-Vickers at Barrow in Furness, the loco was named after the nineteenth century British Prime Minister who became the 1st Earl of Beaconsfield. The original ornate brass nameplates were removed during the Second World War and replaced in 1953 by aluminium ones. The locomotives were used to trains between The City, Baker Street and Rickmansworth, where steam took over for the journey to Aylesbury. They are by far the oldest named main line electric locos. Withdrawal came in 1962 and it was subsequently scrapped. Cast aluminium, length 45½", the front repainted. The nameplate is accompanied by a watercolour painting of the locomotive, by Johnathan Grey, 10"x7", mounted and framed, overall 17"x14". (Dispatch by Mailboxes/Collect from Banbury Depot)
