A nameplate, AJAX, with the building date, L&NWR Co CREWE WORKS OCTR. 1904 from a Whale designed Precursor Class 4-4-0 built at Crewe in October 1904 and named after a hero of the Trojan War. It was LNWR No 639, becoming LMS No 5190 and withdrawn in September 1928. The Precursors were for some years the mainstay on the LNWR's heavy trains. Engraved brass, curved, 50" long, the front polished, the lettering touched in where the original wax infill is missing. The letter L is stamped on the back indicating this is the left hand plate.
