£5,200
A nameplate, TALISMAN, from a GWR 2900 Saint Class 4-6-0 built at Swindon, Works No 2136, in September 1905, originally as a 4-4-2 Atlantic No 189, and named in September 1906 after one of Sir Walter Scott's Waverley novels published in 1825, one of a series of names in the Saint class taken from Scott's books. Converted to a 4-6-0 in October 1912, it was renumbered as 2989 with effect from 28 December 1912. Just surviving into BR service, it was withdrawn from Chester in September 1948 and cut up at Swindon Works. The lower portion of the backplate has been removed (probably at Swindon Works who offered this service to purchasers of their nameplates in the early days of collecting) and a replacement fitted.
