A GWR platelayers velocipede. The GWR imported 100 of these machines in the 1890s for permanent way inspection. One person can be on the vehicle and acceleration is achieved by pushing the vehicle handle forwards and backwards transmitting drive to the wheels via a set of cogs. A maximum speed of 28 mph can be achieved. This example, one of a handful to survive, was based at Titley Junction in Herefordshire and was used to inspect the network of branches to New Radnor, Presteigne, Eardesley and Leominster. It has been expertly restored and is a great rarity. (Dispatch by Mailboxes/Collect from Banbury Depot)
