A South African Railways cabside numberplate, 1189, from a Central South African Railways 3ft 6ins gauge 8th Class 4-8-0 No 498 built by the North British Locomotive Co, Works No 15830, in 1903. After the formation of SAR in 1910, it became their Class 8C No 1189. A fine class of engine, they saw service on every system of the SAR, finishing their days on shunting duties until 1972 when all were withdrawn. The added W suffix on the plate indicates that the loco was fitted with inside admission piston valves. Cast brass, 20¾"x14½", ex loco condition, a score mark across the centre. (Postage Band: D)
