A worksplate, LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY, 5243 COWLAIRS 1915, from a North British Railway Class C, LNER J36 Class, 0-6-0, built by Neilson & Co, Works No 4392, in December 1891, NBR No 673, becoming LNER 9673, renumbered 5243 in 1946, BR 65243. It was rebuilt in 1915 with a new standard boiler; hence this date on the plate. It was one of 25 of the Class commandeered by the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers during the 1914-18 War and sent to France in November 1917 for working supply trains to the Western Front. On Its return to the NBR in June 1919, it was named "Maude" after the WW1 General. The painted name was removed at Inverurie in June 1945, reinstated at Cowlairs in June 1948, removed again by September 1956 but again reinstated at Haymarket shed in February 1960. It was withdrawn from Bathgate on 14 July 1966 and survives in preservation at the ripe old age of 132. Cast brass, 9"x5", the front repainted. (Postage Band: C)
