A smokebox numberplate, 65224, from a North British Railway Class C, LNER J36 Class, 0-6-0 No 648 built at Cowlairs in February 1891, becoming LNER 9648, renumbered 5224 in 1946 and BR 65224. During WW1 the Government commandeered twenty-five J36s for service in France. No 648 went to the War Department in October 1917 and returned to the NBR in May 1919. In recognition of their war service these locos were given appropriate names and 648 was named MONS after the famous WW1 battle, the name being painted on the centre splasher. A long time St Margarets resident, this loco was withdrawn from there on 16 May 1963 and sold for scrap to TW Ward at Inverkeithing on 14 February 1964. The plate has been broken and welded, though is unrestored. (Postage Band: D)
