A smokebox numberplate, 48020, from an LMS Class 8F 2-8-0 built at Crewe and allocated new to Wellingborough on 16 February 1937. In 1941 it was requisitioned by the War Department, becoming WD No 579, and shipped to Persia in November 1941, becoming Persian Railways No 41.168. In 1944 it was renumbered to WD 70579 and transferred by rail to Egypt and Palestine. On returning to the UK in May 1948 it was purchased by BR and allocated to Crewe South on 14 December 1949. Its later sheds were Nuneaton, Shrewsbury and Northampton from where it was withdrawn in August 1965 and sold for scrap to J. Buttigieg of Newport. The front background repainted. (Postage Band: D)
