£460
A worksplate, AVELING & PORTER, No. 1310, ROCHESTER, from one of a pair of identical single cylinder ploughing engines of 8 nominal horse power built on 2 April 1877. These were supplied new to P Smith of Bentworth, Hampshire and No 1310 subsequently passed to the Earl of Onslow of Clandon Park, Surrey. It was reboilered in 1919 and ended up with Edward J Edwards of Norwich where it was scrapped in 1940. Avelings did not make many ploughing engines (they were famous for constructing road rollers - they built more than any other manufacturer) and so this is a rare plate as well as being a very early survivor. Engraved brass, 10"x7¼", the front lightly polished. (Postage Band: C)
