£1,700
A South Eastern & Chatham Railway cabside numberplate, 331, ASHFORD WORKS, from a South Eastern Railway Stirling O Class 0-6-0 built at Ashford in February 1886. Many of the class were rebuilt and re-classified to O1 but this engine was not rebuilt and was withdrawn in October 1913. A note left by the vendor's late father states that all the numberplates from withdrawn engines of this class were melted down for the 1914-18 war effort with this plate being the sole survivor. He had the plate restored to its correct SECR colours on the advice of the NRM. Cast brass, 16½"x11½", the front repainted. (Postage Band: N/A)
